The Seesaw Effect

My childhood seems like a very long time ago. My favourite piece of equipment in the playground was probably the slide. Or was it the seesaw? It was exhilarating when my end of the board was sent up in the air thanks to my playmate’s feet having pushed against the ground.

I wouldn’t enjoy seesawing now, even if I could fit onto the board. But many of us have been experiencing what I call “the seesaw effect.”

During the last fifteen months a lot of us have found we’re up one minute and down the next. The pandemic and all that goes with it, has been largely responsible for our many high and low points.

Illness, bereavement, confinement, isolation and loneliness are but a few of the triggers for our reaching those low points. At these times we may have felt the need for spiritual intervention. Perhaps we’ve sent out a prayer or a thought asking for help.

Our high points may have occurred when healing has taken place. Perhaps our guardian angel put in an appearance presenting a solution to what seemed like an unsurmountable problem. Perhaps we received good news about a loved one. Hopefully at these times we’ve also sent out a prayer or thought – one giving thanks.

More of us have hit rock bottom more often during the pandemic. We need to remember that our prayers are always heard and acted upon, even though we might not realise it at the time. No prayer is ever wasted and all prayers are answered in the most appropriate way. Knowing that life probably has yet more challenges in store for us, we can ask for the strength needed to deal with them.

We can cope with the high points. That’s easy. But when we’re tipped down low it can be difficult to handle. Perhaps we can try imagining we are on a seesaw. We need to just hold on, and push with all our might to raise ourselves up again.
