I first met Mollie and Peter at Croydon Spiritualist Church in the summer of 1987. We had
become interested in Spiritualism and attended six lectures given by Pat Robertson the then Vice
President, covering all aspects of the religion. Because of our interest we were invited to join the
church development circle run by Pat and we became firm friends over the years that followed.
Mollie was very supportive in so many ways. Always willing to listen and offer advice and
support. Her family were her life but over time Mollie often spoke of her second family, the
church, as we made so many friends over the years within the church community who remain
friends to this day, although a diminishing number.
Mollie joined the church committee soon after becoming a church member and when her
predecessor Wilfred Watts resigned after 25 years, she was elected President in 1998 and held
that position until resigning in 2018, making her the second longest serving President in the 100
years history of the church.
Mollie was a strict supporter of the ‘Rules for Churches’ and she often pointed out that ‘if you
stuck to the rules you couldn’t go wrong’. By this she meant that if there was a disagreement it
would never become a personal argument, which Mollie always tried to avoid.
During Mollie’s time as President she oversaw many improvements in and around the church,
putting to good use money that had been bequeathed to the church but never used. These
improvements include a modern kitchen, upgraded toilets to include a disabled toilet, painting of
the internal walls, central heating, replacement double glazed windows, new carpet tiles
throughout, replacement internal and external doors, improvements to the rear garden including
ramp access to the rear of the church.
However, as well as her commitment to the church and the Spiritualist National Union, Mollie
did have her lighter, fun side. If you were around during her Presidency, you will remember the
church birthday parties that were held and for a few years included shows put on by the
committee and others with Mollie a keen participant. I’ll never forget ‘The Pink Thrills’ and
‘Ballet Burlesque’ overseen by Pat Davis and her friend Sandy.
Mollie has left a legacy that is visible for all to see around the building and the church, the East
London District Council and the Spiritualists’ National Union all benefitted from her
commitment and love of the religion.
She will be missed by all who knew her.
