Upsy-Daisy Day: A silly name but a great message!

upsy daisy day

There seem to be celebration days for everything! Most of them are invented or embraced by marketers. The other day it was ‘National Cheese Day’. I received an email from Costa telling me the ideal way to celebrate was to have a cheese toastie at one of their coffee shops!

Upsy-Daisy Day, observed every 8th of June, is different and is a celebration that encourages us to meet the day with optimism, enthusiasm, and positivity. Though not originally from the United Kingdom, this uplifting celebration has been warmly received, and I think it finds a unique resonance with the Spiritualist principle of the ‘Brotherhood of Man’.

The term “upsy-daisy” (or oopsy-daisy) holds a treasured place in British vernacular. It’s a gentle expression of encouragement, typically used to soothe a child after a minor stumble or tumble, an invocation of resilience and positive thinking in the face of small adversities. This idea of overcoming life’s minor setbacks with a bright and positive outlook is central to the essence of Upsy-Daisy Day.

In Spiritualism, one of the key principles is the ‘Brotherhood of Man’. This principle signifies that all human beings are interconnected, bound together by shared experiences and common humanity. It emphasises that we should treat each other with kindness, compassion, and understanding. In this spirit of interconnectedness, our individual actions can have a profound impact on the lives of others, including how we approach our day.

Upsy-Daisy Day echoes this tenet, inspiring us to approach our day with a positive attitude, not only for our benefit but for the happiness and welfare of others. Each kind word, every small act of generosity, or even just a shared smile can contribute to a ripple effect of positivity and shared joy. This approach aligns beautifully with the spiritual principle of the ‘Brotherhood of Man’—as we uplift ourselves, we also uplift others.

Upsy-Daisy Day isn’t just about cultivating personal positivity; it’s also about sharing that positivity with others, reinforcing the spiritual connection between all people. It’s about recognising that our actions, even seemingly small ones, have the power to impact others’ lives and well-being. In the spirit of the ‘Brotherhood of Man’, Upsy-Daisy Day prompts us to spread joy, share a kind word or a thoughtful deed, and thereby contribute to the happiness and well-being of the broader community.

The recognition of the interconnection between all people encourages us to be mindful of our thoughts, words, and actions. It asks us to empathise with others and to extend compassion and understanding in our interactions. This mindset can transform our approach to the day, turning even the most ordinary tasks into opportunities for positivity and connection.

Upsy-Daisy Day, in its delightful simplicity, is a powerful reminder of the power of a positive attitude. While seemingly a simple celebration, it embodies a profound spiritual principle. It serves as a reminder that positivity, joy, and compassion are not just personal experiences but shared ones. By embracing the spirit of Upsy-Daisy Day and the ‘Brotherhood of Man’, we can spread positivity, cultivate joy, and contribute to the collective happiness and well-being of our shared human family. It’s a lesson that goes beyond a single day’s celebration, extending into how we might approach each day of our lives. In this, Upsy-Daisy Day carries a profound message of joy, positivity, and shared human connection.
