How do you square ‘The Brotherhood of Man’ with negative people in your life?

people are a problem

This is a question I recently asked myself after an unpleasant encounter. The obvious answer is that people are a problem. However, that is a glib response to an issue that many of us face more often than we would care to admit.,

The spiritualist principle ‘the brotherhood of man’ emphasises the idea that all humans are interconnected and are part of a single, spiritual family. It’s about recognizing the fundamental unity of all people, regardless of their actions or attitudes. This belief is found not only in Spiritualism but also in many other religious and spiritual traditions around the world.

The challenge is that not everyone behaves in a manner that respects this unity. There are indeed people who act harmfully or maliciously, which can make it difficult to feel a sense of kinship with them.

Here are a few considerations that might help reconcile these realities:

  1. Recognise the inherent worth of every individual: Every person, regardless of their behaviour, has inherent worth and potential for growth and transformation. This doesn’t mean you have to like everyone or condone their behaviour. But it does mean recognising that even those who act poorly are still part of the human family and deserving of basic respect.
  2. Separate actions from the individual: Another strategy is to differentiate between a person’s actions and their intrinsic value as a human being. Someone might act harmfully because they are driven by fear, ignorance, or pain, not because they are inherently ‘bad’. This view allows us to disapprove of harmful actions while still affirming the worth of the individual.
  3. Embrace forgiveness and compassion: Compassion and forgiveness can be powerful tools for dealing with difficult people. This doesn’t mean allowing others to harm us or others, but it means trying to understand the pain or struggle that might be driving someone’s harmful actions and seeking to respond with kindness and understanding whenever possible.
  4. Protect yourself and others: While the Brotherhood of Man principle promotes unity and respect for all, it doesn’t mean you should put yourself or others in harm’s way. If someone is consistently harmful or dangerous, it’s important to take necessary measures to protect yourself and others. This could mean setting strong boundaries, seeking help from authorities, or distancing yourself from the person.
  5. Believe in the potential for change: Finally, a key aspect and a spiritualist principle is the belief in the potential for personal growth and transformation. People can and do change, sometimes dramatically. Keeping this in mind can make it easier to maintain a sense of brotherhood even with those who are currently acting harmfully. This might not be a reality until they pass onto the other side of life, in which case, point 4 above still applies.

Remember, maintaining a belief in the ‘brotherhood of man’ is not always easy, and it’s okay to struggle with it. It’s a principle to strive towards, not a standard to judge yourself by. By treating others with respect and kindness, protecting yourself and others when necessary, and holding onto the hope of change, it’s possible to live by this principle even in a complex and often difficult world.
